How to Use WhatsApp on Two Phones at Once (Linked Devices Guide)
Do you have two phones — maybe one for work and one for personal use — and wish you could use the same WhatsApp account on both? Good news: you can. WhatsApp's Linked Devices feature, also called companion mode, lets you use one WhatsApp account on a second Android phone, and also on a tablet or a computer through WhatsApp Web or the desktop app.
In this guide, you will learn how to link a second phone step by step, what the honest limits are, and how to keep your account safe while doing it.

What Is Companion Mode?
Normally, WhatsApp is tied to one phone number on one phone. Companion mode changes that. Your second phone becomes a "linked device" connected to the same account. Your chats sync to it, and you can send and receive messages from either phone.
This is useful if you carry two phones, if your main phone is charging in another room, or if you want a bigger screen for typing while your main phone stays in your pocket.

How to Link a Second Phone: Step-by-Step Guide
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Install WhatsApp on the second phone. Download WhatsApp from the Google Play Store on the phone you want to add. Open it, but do not enter a phone number yet.
Step 2: Choose "Link as companion device". On the welcome screen, look for the option to link the phone instead of registering a number. Depending on your version, it may appear as "Link as companion device" or under the three-dot menu as "Link this device". Tap it. The second phone will now show a QR code.
Step 3: Open Linked devices on your main phone. On your primary phone (the one where WhatsApp already works), go to Settings > Linked devices > Link a device. Your camera will open.
Step 4: Scan the QR code. Point your main phone's camera at the QR code shown on the second phone. Within a few seconds, the second phone will start syncing your chats. That is it — you can now chat from both phones.

Honest Limits You Should Know
Linked Devices is very handy, but it is not magic. Here are the real limits:
- Your main phone does not need to stay online. Once linked, the second phone works on its own internet connection. Your primary phone can be switched off and your linked phone will still send and receive messages.
- But do not abandon your main phone for too long. If your primary phone stays inactive for over 14 days, your linked devices will be logged out automatically for security. So open WhatsApp on your main phone at least once every couple of weeks.
- Some features may work a little differently on the companion phone. Most everyday features — messages, photos, voice notes and calls — work fine, but a few settings, such as live location sharing or managing broadcast lists, may only be fully available on the primary phone. If something looks missing, check it on your main phone.
- Your chats stay end-to-end encrypted. Linking a device does not remove WhatsApp's encryption, and WhatsApp still cannot read your messages.
Safety First: Only Link Devices You Own and Trust
This part is important. The QR code is like a key to your account. Never share it with a stranger, and never scan a QR code someone sends you to "link" your account. If a stranger links their device to your WhatsApp, they could read your chats.
Only link phones, tablets or computers that belong to you or someone you fully trust. If you ever lose a linked phone, open Settings > Linked devices on your main phone and remove that device right away.

Tips for Smooth Use
- Keep both phones connected to the internet during the first sync, especially if you have many chats and photos — the first sync can take a few minutes.
- Make sure WhatsApp is updated to the latest version on both phones before linking.
- Use the same good habits on both phones: lock your phone screen, and do not leave a linked phone unlocked in a public place.
What to Do If Linking Fails
- QR code not scanning? Clean both cameras, brighten the second phone's screen, and hold the phones steady about 20–30 cm apart. If the code has expired, go back and generate a fresh one.
- Stuck on syncing? Check the internet connection on both phones, then close and reopen WhatsApp on the second phone and try again.
- "Link as companion device" option missing? Update WhatsApp from the Play Store on both phones. Companion mode needs a recent version, and very old phones may not support it.
- Still not working? Restart both phones, then repeat the steps once. If the problem continues, unlink and relink the device from Settings > Linked devices.
Final Words
Linked Devices is one of WhatsApp's most useful features for people with two phones. Set it up once, keep your main phone active, and only link devices you trust — and your WhatsApp will simply be where you are.
