How to Check Which App Uses the Most Mobile Data on Android

Your mobile data pack finishes a week early, but you cannot tell why. The usual suspect is not your browsing — it is one or two apps quietly using data in the background: auto-playing videos, cloud photo backups, or app updates over mobile data. The good news is that your Android phone already tracks exactly how much data every app uses. You just need to know where to look.

One or two apps usually eat most of your mobile data. Here is how to find them.

How to Check Data Usage Per App on Android

Follow these steps. Menu names differ slightly by phone brand, but the path is similar on Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, and other Android phones:
  1. Open Settings on your phone.
  2. Tap "Network & internet" (on Samsung phones, tap "Connections").
  3. Tap "Data usage" or "Mobile data usage".
  4. Tap "App data usage" to see a list of apps sorted by how much mobile data each one has used.
The app at the top of the list is your biggest data eater for the selected period. You can also change the time range to see usage for this month or a previous month.

What to Do About a Data-Hungry App

Once you find the culprit, you have three easy options:
  • Turn off background data: Tap the app in the usage list, open its settings, and switch off "Background data". The app will then use data only when you actually open it.
  • Stop auto-play videos: Inside video and social apps, turn off video auto-play or set it to Wi-Fi only. This alone can save a large amount of data.
  • Turn off auto-backup over mobile data: In photo backup apps, set uploads to Wi-Fi only, so your photos do not upload while you are out.
You do not need to delete the app. Controlling its background data is usually enough.

Why This Check Matters

A quick monthly check can stop two common problems: data packs running out early, and a slow connection caused by background uploads. If your mobile data not working at all, that is a different problem with its own fixes. And if you also want to control how much time you spend in apps, Digital Wellbeing shows your screen time next to your usage habits.

FAQ

Q: Does this show Wi-Fi usage too? A: The mobile data list shows mobile data only. Wi-Fi usage is shown separately on most phones, or not tracked per app at all.
Q: Will turning off background data stop my messages? A: For messaging apps, background data keeps new messages arriving instantly. If you turn it off, messages may arrive late, so keep it on for your main messaging app.
Q: Does this work without any extra app? A: Yes. Data usage tracking is built into Android, so no third-party app is needed.
