Mobile Data Not Working? 7 Simple Fixes for Android Internet Problems

Your WiFi works but your mobile data does not, or nothing works at all. Before you blame your provider, try these simple fixes. Most mobile data problems are a small phone setting, not a network outage. Work through the list in order, and check after each step.

Mobile data problems are often a small phone setting, not a network outage.

1. Check That Mobile Data Is Actually On

Swipe down twice to open Quick Settings. Make sure Mobile Data is on, and check that Airplane Mode is not on.

2. Toggle Airplane Mode On and Off

Turn Airplane Mode on, wait ten seconds, then turn it off. This forces your phone to reconnect to the nearest tower.

Toggling airplane mode forces a fresh connection to the mobile tower.

3. Restart Your Phone

A restart clears temporary network errors and reloads the SIM connection.

4. Check Your Data Limit and Plan

Go to Settings, then Network and internet, then SIMs (or Mobile network). Check your data usage and whether a warning or limit is set. Also confirm that your recharge or plan has not expired, using your carrier app or customer care.

5. Make Sure Data Is Enabled for That App

Go to Settings, then Apps, tap the app, then Mobile data and WiFi, and make sure "Background data" is allowed. Data Saver mode can block background data, so turn it off temporarily to test.

6. Reseat the SIM Card

Switch off your phone, remove the SIM tray with the ejector tool, wipe the SIM gently, replace it, and switch the phone on. Try the second SIM slot if you have one. If the same SIM works in another phone, the problem is your phone settings, not the SIM.

7. Reset Network Settings (Last Resort on the Phone)

Go to Settings, then System, then Reset options, then Reset WiFi, mobile and Bluetooth. This erases saved WiFi passwords and Bluetooth pairings, but does not delete your photos, apps, or files. Restart your phone and test again.

Resetting network settings gives your phone a clean connection start.

Work through these steps in order until your data is back.

When to Contact Your Carrier

If you have tried everything and your data still does not work, especially if the same SIM works in another phone, it could be an outage, an account problem, or a faulty SIM. Tell your carrier which steps you have already tried. One useful check while you troubleshoot: if your home WiFi is also acting strangely, it may not be your phone at all. Our guide on checking who is using your WiFi can help you rule out a crowded home network.
