WhatsApp Chat Backup: How to Back Up Your Chats to Google Drive on Android
Your WhatsApp chats hold years of memories, family photos, work messages and important contacts. If you lose your phone or switch to a new one without a backup, all of it can be gone in a moment. The good news is that WhatsApp on Android can back up your chats to Google Drive automatically, so restoring them later takes just a few taps.

What You Need Before You Back Up
Before you start, make sure you have a Google account signed in on your phone, enough free space in Google Drive, and a stable Wi-Fi connection. Backups over mobile data can be slow and can eat into your data plan, so Wi-Fi is the safer choice. Also check that WhatsApp is updated to the latest version from the Play Store.
How to Back Up WhatsApp to Google Drive — Step by Step
Follow these steps on your Android phone:
- Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
- Tap Settings, then Chats, then Chat backup.
- Tap Google Account and choose the account you want to use for backups.
- Tap Back up to Google Drive and choose how often: daily, weekly or monthly.
- Choose whether to include videos, then tap Back Up to start your first backup now.

Check Your Backup Settings
Automatic backups only help if they are actually running. Open Settings, then Chats, then Chat backup, and look at the date and time of your last backup. If it is old, tap Back Up now. It is also worth turning on backup over Wi-Fi only, so a large backup never starts unexpectedly on mobile data.

Restore Your Chats on a New Phone
When you move to a new Android phone, install WhatsApp, verify the same phone number, and sign in with the same Google account. WhatsApp will detect your Google Drive backup and ask if you want to restore it. Tap Restore, wait for the process to finish, and your chats and media will appear just as they were.

What If the Backup Fails or Runs Out of Space?
If a backup keeps failing, first check your internet connection and your free Google Drive space. Try backing up without videos, which are usually the largest part of a backup. If the problem continues, restart your phone and try again on Wi-Fi. Keeping an old backup is better than having none at all, so do not put this off.
While you are protecting your WhatsApp account, it is also worth locking your private chats. Our guide WhatsApp Chat Lock: How to Lock Private Chats with Fingerprint shows how to keep selected chats behind your fingerprint.
Final Thoughts
A WhatsApp backup takes only a few minutes to set up, but it can save years of messages and memories. Set it to back up automatically, check it once in a while, and you will never have to worry about losing your chats again.
