Instagram Notes: Share Short Updates That Disappear After 24 Hours

Sometimes you do not want to post a photo or a story — you just want to say something short, like ‘Weekend plan?’ or ‘New video is up!’ Instagram Notes are made for exactly that: a short text update that sits at the top of your friends' message inbox and disappears after 24 hours.

What Are Instagram Notes?

A Note is a short message of up to 60 characters that appears above your profile photo in the Direct Messages (DM) inbox. Your followers who follow you back — or your Close Friends, if you choose that audience — can see it. It is lighter than a post and quieter than a story: no photo, no video, just a few words.

How to Post an Instagram Note

1. Open Instagram and tap the Messages (paper plane / Messenger) icon at the top-right.

2. At the top of your inbox, tap your own profile photo with the + or the ‘Note...’ bubble.

3. Type your note. Keep it short — you only have 60 characters.

4. Choose who can see it: Followers you follow back or Close Friends.

5. Tap Share.

Your note now appears at the top of your friends' inboxes until it expires after 24 hours, or until you replace it with a new one.

How Replies Work

When someone taps your note and replies, their reply arrives as a normal direct message to you — it is not shown publicly. That makes Notes a nice, low-pressure way to start a conversation: a friend can react to your one line without it becoming a public comment.

How to Delete or Change a Note

Changed your mind? Open your messages, tap your own note, and choose Delete note. To post a new one, just follow the same steps and share a fresh note — the old one is replaced automatically.

Ideas for Notes That Actually Work

- ‘New reel is live — go watch!’

- ‘Busy today, will reply tonight.’

- ‘Who is free this weekend?’

- ‘Exam done! Finally free.’

Reply to Instagram Note

Keep notes short, friendly, and real. People scroll past long, sales-like messages, but a genuine one-liner often gets a reply.
