Google Storage Full? How to Free Up Space in Gmail, Drive and Photos

‘Your Google storage is full.’ That message usually appears at the worst moment — when an important email cannot arrive or a photo will not back up. The good news: free Google accounts get 15 GB shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos, and most of that space is usually taken up by a few large files you no longer need. Here is how to find them and free up space without paying for extra storage.

Free up Google storage full

First: See What Is Using Your Space

1. On your phone or computer, open one.google.com/storage (or open the Google One app, if installed).

2. You will see a breakdown of how much space Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos each use.

3. Start with the biggest one — that is where you will free the most space fastest.

Clean Up Google Drive

- Open Drive, sort files by size, and delete large videos and old files you no longer need.

- Then open Trash in Drive and empty it — deleted files still count toward your storage until the trash is emptied. (Drive trash normally clears itself after 30 days, but emptying it now frees space immediately.)

- Check shared files too: removing a file you own frees space, but removing someone else's shared file from your Drive does not, because it was never using your storage.

Clean Up Gmail

- In Gmail search, type has:attachment larger:10M to find emails with large attachments. Delete the ones you do not need, then empty the Gmail trash.

- Unsubscribe from newsletters you never read, and delete old promotional emails in bulk using the search box.

- Remember: Gmail trash also counts until it is emptied or auto-deleted after 30 days.

Clean Up Google Photos

- Delete blurry photos, duplicate shots, and long videos you have already saved elsewhere.

- In the Google Photos app, use Free up space — this removes device copies of photos that are already backed up, which frees space on your phone (not your Google storage, but still useful).

- Backing up in ‘Storage saver’ quality uses less space than original quality for future uploads. Changing this setting does not shrink photos already backed up.

The Cleanup Order That Works

1. Check your storage breakdown.

2. Delete large files in Drive and empty the trash.

3. Delete large email attachments and empty the Gmail trash.

4. Remove unwanted photos and videos.

5. Wait a few minutes and re-check — freed space sometimes takes a short while to show up.

If you still need more space after a proper cleanup, Google One paid plans are an option — but try the free cleanup first. Many people recover several gigabytes in one sitting, just from old videos and forgotten attachments.
