WhatsApp Chat Transfer: Move Your Chats to a New Android Phone Without Losing Them
Got a new Android phone? The first worry for most people is WhatsApp chats — years of conversations, family photos and important messages. The good news is that WhatsApp has a built-in way to move everything to your new phone safely and free. You do not need any third-party app, and you should never pay anyone to do it for you.
Before You Start: Two Things to Check
1. Use the same phone number on your new phone as on your old phone. WhatsApp identifies you by your number.
2. Keep both phones nearby, charged above 50%, and connected to WiFi.
Method 1: Transfer Chats with a QR Code (Fastest)
This moves your chats directly from one phone to the other over WiFi, without using mobile data.
1. On your old phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings.
2. Tap Chats, then Transfer chats.
3. Tap Start and grant the permissions WhatsApp asks for.
4. On your new phone, install WhatsApp and register with the same phone number.
5. Your new phone will show a QR code.
6. On your old phone, scan that QR code.
7. Keep both phones close together and wait for the transfer to finish. Do not close WhatsApp or switch off either phone during the transfer.
When it is done, your new phone will show all your old chats, just as they were.
Method 2: Restore from a Google Drive Backup
1. On your old phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings, then Chats, then Chat backup.
2. Tap Back up, making sure it is linked to your Google account.
3. On your new phone, install WhatsApp and register with the same phone number and the same Google account.
4. When WhatsApp finds your backup, tap Restore.
5. Wait for the restore to finish, then tap Next. Your chats will appear, and your media will download in the background.
Tip: Before backing up, turn on Include videos if you want your videos moved too. This makes the backup larger, so use WiFi.
Which Method Should You Choose?
The QR code method is faster, but it needs both phones with you at the same time. The Google Drive restore works even if your old phone is gone, as long as you made a backup first. If you are not sure, make a Drive backup first as a safety net. We have a full guide on it here: https://newtricksdaily.blogspot.com/2026/10/whatsapp-chat-backup-how-to-back-up.html
Common Problems and Fixes
- Transfer stuck: Make sure both phones are on the same WiFi, stay close together, and do not lock the screen during the transfer.
- Backup not found: Check that you signed in with the same Google account and the same phone number.
- Media missing: Photos and videos download after your chats appear, so give it some time on WiFi.
One Warning
Never use unknown "WhatsApp transfer" apps from outside the Play Store. They can steal your chats and data. WhatsApp's own tools are free, safe, and all you need.
Moving to a new phone should feel exciting, not stressful. Have you ever lost chats while changing phones? Which method worked for you — QR transfer or backup restore? Share your experience in the comments.
